Government Gateway Login: How To Access Your Gateway Account

The Government Gateway is an IT system that was developed to register for online services provided by the UK Government, such as obtaining a driving license and HMRC self-assessment. This replaced the old system of paper submissions. If you already have a Government Gateway account you can sign in to the Government Gateway Login using your existing login details. However, if you don’t have account you would have to Create sign in details.

How To Create A Government Gateway Account

1.1 What you need

To create a Government Gateway user ID, you’ll need:

  • Your name
  • An email address
  • A password
  • A memorable word, which Government Gateway calls a ‘recovery word’

1.2 How to set up a Government Gateway user ID

To create a user ID:

  1. Click the link emailed to you to access the Breathing Space service.
  2. You’ll be asked to ‘sign in using Government Gateway’.
  3. Scroll down the page and select ‘Create sign in details’.
  4. Enter the email address you want to use with your Government Gateway user ID. If you’re the super user, this must be the email address you used when you were enrolled on the service.
  5. Enter the confirmation code the service has sent to your email.
  6. If you have not received a code, click on ‘I have not got the email’ and a new code will be emailed to you.
  7. Enter your name.
  8. Create your password.
  9. Create your recovery word.
  10. Your Government Gateway registration is now complete.

The next screen confirms your user ID. It will also be sent to your confirmed email address. You’ll need your user ID and the password you set up every time you try to access the Breathing Space service.

Once you’ve created your Government Gateway online account, you can sign in for things like your personal or business tax account, Self Assessment, Corporation Tax, PAYE for employers and VAT.

Follow the steps below to sign to your Government Gateway online account:

  • Go to the Government Gateway Login page
  • Enter your Government Gateway user ID. This could be up to 12 characters.
  • Enter your Password
  • Click or tap on the “Sign in” button.

How To Reset Your Government Gateway Login Details

If you have forgotten your password for your Government Gateway account, you must follow certain steps in order to reset it to a new one.

What you will need: You must have both of the following:

  • Your Government Gateway user ID
  • Access to the email address that you used to set up your Government Gateway account

You will also need your recovery word, if you were asked for one when you set up your Government Gateway account.

Without these details you cannot reset your Government Gateway password.

How to Reset Your Password:

If you do not have multi-factor authentication set up, you will need to follow these steps if your account does not have multi-factor authentication:

  1. When you are asked to sign in to Government Gateway, scroll down and select ‘I have forgotten my password’.
  2. Enter the email address associated with your Government Gateway user ID.
  3. A code will be emailed to you which you will need to enter next.
  4. Enter your Government Gateway user ID.
  5. Enter the requested letters of your recovery word – you will only be asked for this if you have one set up.
  6. Create a new password.

If you cannot remember your recovery word: If you are asked for letters from your recovery word and you cannot remember it, you will need to create a new Government Gateway account follow the steps above.

If you have multi-factor authentication set up: Multi-factor authentication is an additional security feature you can set up.

If your account already has multi-factor authentication set up, you will need to follow these steps to reset your password:

  1. When you are asked to sign in to Government Gateway, scroll down and select ‘I have forgotten my password’.
  2. Enter the email address associated with your Government Gateway user ID.
  3. A code will be emailed to you which you will need to enter next.
  4. Enter your Government Gateway user ID.
  5. Enter the code sent to the device you set up multi-factor authentication on.
  6. Create a new password.

How to reset your Government Gateway User ID

If you have forgotten your Government Gateway User ID go to https://www.access.service.gov.uk/account-recovery/forgot-userid-password/check-your-emails and follow the onscreen instructions to recover it.
