How Does USAA Safe Pilot App Work

The USAA SafePilot App instructs, inspires and rewards safe driving habits to help keep you safe on the road while lowering your auto insurance premium. Eligible members can receive a discount for enrolling and participating in the program, and earn a premium discount at renewal time for being safe drivers.

When activated, the app monitors driving habits including phone handling, hands-free phone use, and harsh braking. The better you drive, the greater the discount on your next premium. All members of a household included on a USAA auto insurance policy can participate, with the earned discount based on an average of each driver’s individual score.

Features of USAA Safe Pilot App

Better Driving, Bigger Discounts: The better you drive, the bigger the discount you’ll earn. It’s that easy. Just focus on keeping your hands off your phone while driving and leaving enough distance between yourself and the cars in front of you.

Driving Insights and Trends: Learn about your driving habits—like how often you use your phone while driving and how often you brake harshly—and see how you can improve.

Automatic and Smart Trip Logging: Using your phone’s GPS and built-in sensors, we’ll automatically log your trips and smart trip data like whether you were the driver, passenger or making calls while driving.

How Does USAA SafePilot Know when You are Not Driving?

SafePilot allows users to manually tell the app when they’re driving, versus riding as passengers. Even when users don’t tell the app if they’re driving or riding, the app’s technology is able to determine—based on prior user behavior—if they’re the ones driving.

Troubleshooting Methods:

  • This may be a temporary issue. You can close and open the app to see whether it fixes the issue.
  • If you’re using mobile data connection, disable and enable again
  • If you’re using a Wifi connection, turn off wifi and turn on again to check if it is a wifi issue.
  • Restart your android/iphone and try opening the app to see if it works fine.

1: Force Close The App

First, if you’re stuck in the app, force close it to get out. This means you’ll have to shut it down completely instead of just backing out and letting it run in the background.

Android:

Open up the ‘recent applications’ menu by hitting the leftmost button at the very bottom of the screen. A slideshow of all your currently running apps will pop up. Scroll left to right until you find SafePilot App and close it by swiping the app up. If you’d like to close all your apps at once, just tap the ‘close all’ button.

iPhone:

If you have an iPhone X or more recent model, you can reach the ‘recent applications’ menu by swiping up from the bottom of the screen, and then pausing when you reach the middle. If you have an iPhone 8 or earlier model, you just have to double-tap the home button.

Scroll side to side to find the app, then swipe it up to shut it down.

2. Clear the Data Cache

The app’s data cache is a storage of user information that allows the app to quickly load your settings and preferences. But if that data somehow becomes corrupted by a bad save or an error, it can mess up and freeze your app. Clearing the cache can set that straight by giving the phone and the app a blank slate to work with.

Android:

Tap on the ‘Apps’ menu listed in your settings. Find and select the USAA app, then select ‘storage’. When you’re in the storage, hit ‘clear cache’ to delete the data on your phone. This won’t delete the app or your account, just the saved data.

iPhone:

Try to access the settings in your USAA SafePilot app for an option to reset your cache. If your app keeps freezing, or the option doesn’t exist, then you’ll need to skip this step and head straight to uninstalling.

3. Delete and reinstall

Deleting the app will fix any problems that might’ve happened during the initial install or any updates. Look for the app icon on your phone. Tap and hold it until an ‘uninstall’ or ‘delete’ option comes up, then go ahead and uninstall it.

Final Solution To USAA Safe Pilot App Not Working

If that doesn’t help then follow the troubleshooting method below.

It is one of the most common problem in mobile phones and tablets. Usually when you open an app, you will see a black screen for few seconds and then app will crash with or without an error message. There are few ways to fix this problem.

  • Most of the times, it might be a temporary loading issue. You just need to press the recent applications menu (usually the first left button) in your phone. Then you close the app that has this issue. Now open the app again. It may work normally.
  • Try to restart your iPhone / iPad. Press the power off button for few seconds and then choose restart from the menu to restart your device. Now you can try opening the app, it may work fine.
  • If none of the above worked, you can wait till your phone battery drains and it turns off automatically. After that put it to charge, and press the power button. It may work after this.
  • Finally, if you can’t fix it with anything, you may need to uninstall the app and re-install it. iOS usually provides an option to restore settings and content from iCloud backup, if you’ve enabled it previously.
  • Even in some rare cases, the re-install step also don’t work. If that is your case, try installing older versions of the app. Good luck!

I have called USAA likely 20 times trying to get my Safe Pilot to track. All suggestions done. Still not tracking on my Iphone. Help

  2. Hello! Make sure the location settings are set to always and precise location. I hope this helps. Thanks and regards.

  3. Flavia Anne Rousu says:

SafePilot will not track on my phone, either. I have called USAA, reloaded the app, made sure location is ‘always’, the phone program is current, and it will still not track. Now what do I do?

  4. Hello Flovia, back up the files in your phone and format your phone then reinstall the program again. Troubleshoot if the problem is from your phone by first of all installing and lunching the USAA SafePolit App before other apps.
    I hope this helps.

  5. Amado Camps says:

I called countless times and found USAA representatives unable to fix the problem of app not recording trips. There IT is useless and I believe this is just another scam by big business. No doubt they crunched the numbers and realize this app with promises of up to 30% discount is just a enticement and know a percentage will remain regardless of app failure cause people don’t like change.

  6. This also started happening to me. I just got an email saying it’s been 14 days since the last trip. And I checked and it apparently stopped recording trips. I tried reinstalling the app and checked all the settings and that didn’t work. I’m resetting my phone right now.

  7. Michael Schadler says:

The safe pilot app is recording half or less than half of my trips. I have closed and reopened app, uninstalled and reinstalled, and powered off the phone. Still having issues. All permissions granted to this app. The Android phone has not recorded any app crashes. diagnostics found no issues.

  8. Victor Bertolina says:

SafePilot misses entire trips or misses part of a trip. Very erratic. Support was unable to help. Safe pilot shows harsh braking at locations where brakes were not applied like going uphill!
It’s just not accurate at all. For an app that affects the premium, it is disappointing

  9. Donna McMullian says:

The app keeps registering phone use when I am not on the phone. I was told my phone could be touching something in my.purse! Well today, the app said I drove 2 miles. The problem is that I was in my office working and my car was in the garage 5 blocks away! Called tech support and they don’t see any issue. My score keeps dropping for phone use and I am not using my phone. I guess they don’t want to give any discounts!

  10. Safe pilot wasn’t tracking or was tracking “incomplete” trips. After upgrading to the Android 12 software, things seem to now be working.

Safe pilot recorded either my Waze app or the Glose audiobook app as a phone call. How can I correct the error?
