Most Massachusetts workers are covered by the Unemployment Insurance (UI) program, although workers in some jobs may not be eligible for benefits. When you apply for Unemployment Insurance (UI), your initial eligibility for benefits is based on your earnings and your reason for leaving your job. Ongoing eligibility requirements include being able to work, available for work, and actively searching for work.

Who is eligible? To be eligible for Massachusetts Unemployment Insurance (UI) benefits, you must:

  • Have earned at least:
    • $5,700 during the last 4 completed calendar quarters, and
    • 30 times the weekly benefit amount you would be eligible to collect
  • Be legally authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Be unemployed, or working significantly reduced hours, through no fault of your own
  • Be able and willing to begin suitable work without delay when offered

Weekly eligibility requirements; To qualify for benefits, each week, you must be:

  • Physically able to work
  • Available to work
  • Actively looking for work (3 work search attempts)

You may also be required to register with a Career Center to complete mandatory seminars to remain eligible to receive unemployment benefits.

How To Create Your UI Online Account

To file a claim online, you must create an account on the UI Online portal. Please follow the steps below to create your UI Online account.

If you have never filed a Massachusetts unemployment claim:

  1. Go to the UI Online login screen.
  2. When prompted, you will be asked to e:
  3. Enter your Social Security Number (SSN).
  4. Create a password.

Your password must contain at least 8 characters and include the following:

o At least 1 number
o At least 1 uppercase letter
o At least 1 lowercase letter
o At least 1 special character (i.e. &!@*)

  • Select a security question and answer.
  • Accept the IRS terms by checking the box on the screen.

It is important for you to remember your password and security question and answer. You will use your SSN and your password to access UI Online each week that you request your benefit payment. If you forget your password, you can reset it by clicking “Forgot Password”, answering the security question, and selecting a new password.

Massachusetts Unemployment Login Steps

The Massachusetts Unemployment Login portal is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You need a Massachusetts Unemployment Claimant User ID and password to use Unemployment Benefits Services online.

Your online account allows you to submit an application for Unemployment Insurance benefits and certify to receive weekly benefits. You can also view your claim status and account balance, make changes to your direct deposit account, update your address and phone number.

If you already have a User ID for Massachusetts Unemployment Claimant account, follow the steps below to log on with that User ID and password.

How To Apply for Massachusetts Unemployment Benefits Online 

You should apply for unemployment benefits during your first week of total or partial unemployment. Most claims are processed within 21-28 days after filing. It may take longer if there is an issue with your claim.

What you need: To apply for Unemployment Insurance (UI) benefits, you need to provide personal information including your Social Security number, birth date, home address, email address (optional), and phone number.

You also need information about your employment history from the last 15 months, including:

  • Names of all employers, plus addresses and phone numbers
  • Reasons for leaving those jobs
  • Work start and end dates
  • Recall date (if you were laid off but have a set date to return to work)

You may need additional information in certain situations:

  • If you are not a U.S. citizen — your Alien Registration number
  • If you have children — their birth dates and Social Security numbers
  • If you’re in a union — your union name and local number
  • If you were in the military — your DD-214 Member 4 form. If you don’t have it, you can request your DD-214 online.
  • If you worked for the federal government — your SF8 form (optional)

To receive payments by direct deposit, you’ll also need your bank name, account number, and routing number. Otherwise, the Department of Unemployment Assistance (DUA) will send you a debit card.

If you’re a non-U.S. citizen applying for UI benefits, DUA must verify that you are legally authorized to work in the United States. Non-English speakers can apply for UI in their own languages on DUA’s foreign language application site.

When should you apply for UI benefits? If you have been separated from work, or your hours have been reduced, you should file a claim for UI benefits during your first week of total or partial unemployment. Your claim will begin on the Sunday of the calendar week in which your claim is filed. This date is known as the effective claim date. You will not be paid benefits for any week of unemployment preceding the effective date of your claim.

How To Request Weekly Unemployment Benefits

You must request benefits every week you want a payment, even if your application or appeal is pending. You may request benefits for the prior week at any time beginning Sunday through Saturday of the current week.

Once you have applied for Unemployment Insurance (UI) benefits, you must request benefits for each week during which you are in partial or total unemployment. Sunday is the first day of the week that you can request benefits for the prior week. You may request benefits for the prior week at any time beginning Sunday through Saturday of the current week.

Every time you request weekly benefits, you’ll be asked questions about your unemployment status during the previous week.

  1. Log in to your UI Online account.
  2. Select Request benefit payment on your account home page.
  3. Follow the prompts to request a benefit payment.
  4. Print the confirmation page for your records.

2: By phone:

  1. Call the TeleCert line at (617) 626-6338. The TeleCert hours are 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
  2. Have the following information handy:
    • Your Social Security number
    • Your TeleCert 4-digit pin. If you don’t one, 
    • Your wages earned if you worked during the week claimed
  3. Answer the prompts.
  4. Stay on the line until you are told that your weekly claim filing is complete.
